Mixed Bag

tofino toteLocal artist Angela McGrath is interested in the interception of fashion and art—a place she explores through her Epoché line of leatherware screen printed with designs inspired by freehand painting (McGrath, a visual artist, graduated from Emily Carr in 2014).

Handmade in Vancouver from environment-friendly vegetable-dyed Italian leather, these pieces aren't going to fall apart, or fall out of style. (In fact, the material improves with age). Designs are minimal, with depth; in other words, there are no gratuitous embellishments, only attractively abstract poeticism (the Tofino tote's crest pattern is inspired by surfer-haven ocean swells and the New York bag's dashes mimic post-rainstorm neon reflections).

Thoughtful, functional and gorgeous—artwork like this is as rare as it's lovely. —Adrienne Matei
