5 Pro Pumpkin Carving Tips

Michael Valeroso has been carving pumpkins for 11 years—so, yeah, he's a bit of an expert. If you're in Vancouver, catch him carving a 200-pound pumpkin this Saturday, October 27th, 2019, at McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. We caught up with Michael ahead of time to get his top 5 pumpkin-carving tips. —Vita Daily

tip 1. At the pumpkin patch, opt for a heavy pumpkin. The meat is thicker, which makes any mistakes less noticeable.

tip 2. Choose a shape that matches the figure that you already have envisioned in your head. If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hands.

tip 3. Using the right tool is very important. You can also use clay sculpting tools—I find these easier to use when carving into the nooks and crannies of the pumpkin.

tip 4. Watch tutorials! There are lots of talented artists who create pumpkin-carving videos if you are open to learning. I personally enjoy watching Halloween Wars for inspiration! You can also come watch me at McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver this Sunday, October 27th (12 to 3 p.m.), as I will be doing a live carving!

tip 5. As cliche as it sounds, practice makes perfect. Be patient, find inspiration, and let your imagination run wild!
