MOVR over ordinary personal-training apps, there’s a new guy in town. Recently launched by Vancouver-based personal trainer Aaron de Jong, MOVR, free to download and compatible with Apple and Androids, helps track the progress of your fitness routine and gives you direct feedback right away. With endorsements by super-fit lululemon staffers, it’s something we definitely want to try. But first we spoke to Aaron about his app plans and his personal fitness resolutions. —Siobhan Lidder
How is MOVR different from other fitness apps out there?
From what I found apps are trying to get personalized without actually adapting for the specific user. So the way I train is if somebody comes in and they are feeling sick and tired that day, and they worked out the day before, should they be doing the program that we wrote when they were on their best form? Probably not. There should be an app that reflects that ability and determine where the person is, even if they don't really know. I don't see any other app out there that is being adaptive to exercise specificity the way that we emphasize it.
What is MOVR’s coolest feature?
The coolest feature right now is that we are helping people determine a different approach or different entry point in their fitness experience. The best feature is that out of a possible seven scenarios of where your body is at, you can enter anywhere and it will adapt around where you are every single time you sign in. We can start with that information and use it to say, “You do this all the time, let’s move your body in a different way.” That's the home run and there are a bunch of little features, which make it easier for people to use.
What’s your top workout tip for the average latté-carrying working gal?
A simple concept that often eludes us is to move often and what does that mean? Well it means that I go to my spin class, yoga class and Pilates or then I go to the gym and lift weights or whatever it is. We compartmentalize these tiny periods of time where we are trying to fit it all in and the ideology of the app comes from moving all the time. Can you incorporate regular activities into your day to day? And if you’re not sure how to do certain things, then we come in—we become apart of a lifestyle with movement. Get moving around because everything feels better when you are active.
What was your personal health resolution heading into 2017?
It’s right along the lines of finding balance in my life and around training. Am I consistently moving my body and am I moving it in different ways? Oftentimes people stick to their routine and wonder why nothing is changing. Eat a little cleaner and there are so many ways to change. Moving often so, it’s like, can you move seven days a week? Absolutely, if it is at different intensities so you’re doing something at high intensity and it’s taking a bunch of energy out of you one day and then the next day should be something with more recovery. General flow—which your body can do. We’ve built that into the app as well.
