Collagen Q&A (Win! A $100 Genuine Health Clean Collagen Prize Pack!)

Collagen is getting some big buzz these days, and for good reason: it's the most abundant protein in the body, responsible for the strength and stability of our tissues. Collagen production starts to decline in our 20s and can be visible in the skin, where fine lines and wrinkles appear through aging. And, since many of us don't simply don't consume it every day, it's key to take it as a supplement to enjoy all of its amazing benefits (which extend beyond skin health). We chatted with Joy McCarthy, spokesperson for Genuine Health, which recently launched its latest product, Clean Collagen—a supplement that's highly soluble, digestible and absorbable, plus easy to mix into water, coffee, smoothies and recipes—about the amazing health benefits collagen can offer. —Vita Daily

Collagen seems to be a pretty buzzy word these days—why is that?

For two reasons. One, people are getting results especially seeing the changes on their skin and feeling the changes in their body and two, the research on collagen is pretty impressive!

What is collagen exactly, and why do we need it?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, essentially responsible for the strength and stability of our body tissues … like the scaffolding of our skin and lining the walls of our arteries. But beginning in our 20s, our bodies produce less collagen, which can lead to sagging, dehydrated skin, sore joints and more. The good news is that supplementing with collagen can help to replace what we’ve lost and help us look and feel our best!

What are some of the most amazing/important benefits of collagen?

There are many benefits of collagen that are supported by research, too. There are dozens of studies that support the use of collagen for providing support to more than just our skin. Collagen has been studied for the benefits that it provides to our joints (like improving joint discomfort, our physical performance and helping us recover from injuries more quickly), but collagen can also help to improve bone mineral density, cardiovascular support, and even improve our overall well-being!

What's the best way for us to get the collagen we need?

Collagen can’t be put into topical treatments because it is very hard for collagen to penetrate the dermal barrier. That’s why most collagen enhancing topical creams are made with the individual components of collagen (like hyaluronic acid, which you often see in skin care). The best way to get collagen is to take it orally. There is research to show that hydrolyzed collagen gets absorbed in the GI tract and does in fact get delivered to target tissues like the skin, to rebuild collagen. In fact, taking collagen orally every day has been shown to improve skin hydration and texture, helping us all to look and feel younger.

What is Clean Collagen by Genuine Health and what makes it a unique product?

Clean Collagen provides 10 grams of hydrolyzed, highly absorbable collagen per scoop. It's "clean". The marine is derived from sustainable wild caught fish scales and skins that would otherwise be discarded from the North Atlantic and surrounding cold water seas. The bovine is from grass-fed pasture raised cow hides, antibiotic and hormone free. Sustainable as well because the hides would otherwise be discarded. Plus, Genuine Health made Clean Collagen super easy to use—it’s available in both unflavoured, which you can mix into coffee or tea, smoothies, oatmeal, soup or your favourite recipe, and as a lightly flavoured water enhancer, which you can shake into water for a serving of collagen, plus a hydration boost.

What's your favourite way to get your collagen fix?

I'm a big tea drinker so every night before bed i make myself a cup of tea and mix in one scoop of the unflavoured marine collagen. You can't even taste it!
